Comforting phrases
“I’m really sorry you’re going through this.”
“How can I be helpful to you?”
“Do you want me to bring you some food? What is your favorite food?”
“What you just shared with me was so heartfelt and I really appreciate you opening up to me in this way.”
What NOT to say
“Everything will be OK.”
“Time heals all wounds.”
“Perhaps you could learn something from this.”
Avoid sentences that start with “at least” because it may feel like you are trying to find the good in the situation, which can be agitating.
