Comforting phrases

  • “I’m really sorry you’re going through this.”

  • “How can I be helpful to you?”

  • “Do you want me to bring you some food? What is your favorite food?”

  • “What you just shared with me was so heartfelt and I really appreciate you opening up to me in this way.”

What NOT to say

  • “Everything will be OK.”

  • “Time heals all wounds.”

  • “Perhaps you could learn something from this.”

  • Avoid sentences that start with “at least” because it may feel like you are trying to find the good in the situation, which can be agitating.
